Pregnancy and Parenting Rights
Are you pregnant or have you recently given birth? Are you a new parent adjusting to life after fostering, adopting or becoming a stepparent? Macomb offers resources to support you under Title IX.
Title IX safeguards students who are pregnant, recently had a child, are lactating, recovering from medical conditions related to pregnancy or the childbirth process and more.
Accommodations include leaving class for appointments or to visit the lactation room, changes in schedules or course sequence, time extensions for work and tests, changes in physical spaces and more.
Working with Macomb’s Title IX coordinator, our faculty can help students who need accommodations for pregnancy or related conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions
Title IX defines pregnancy and related conditions as the entire range of experiences related to pregnancy, including pregnancy, childbirth, termination of pregnancy (e.g., miscarriage, stillbirth, or abortion), or lactation; related medical conditions; and recovery therefrom.
Parent under Title IX is defined as “a person who, with respect to another person who is under the age of 18, or who is 18 years or older but incapable of self-care because of a physical or mental disability.” The following categories of individuals are considered parents under the policy:
- Biological Parents
- Adoptive Parents
- Foster Parents
- Stepparents
- Legal Custodian or Guardian
- Actively seeking legal custody, guardianship, visitation, or adoption
While maintaining academic and course standards, accommodations may include:
- Breaks during class to express breast milk, breastfeed or attend to health needs associated with pregnancy or related conditions. This includes eating, drinking or using the restroom.
- Intermittent absences to attend medical appointments.
- Changes in schedule or course sequence.
- Time extensions for coursework and rescheduling of tests and examinations.
- Allowing a student to sit or stand or carry or keep water nearby.
- Counseling services.
- Changes in physical space or supplies (for example, access to a larger desk or a footrest).
- Elevator access.
- A larger uniform or other required clothing or equipment.
- Other supportive measures or procedures as deemed necessary by the Title IX Coordinator.

For lactation spaces at East Campus or M-TEC, if these spaces are not conducive to your schedule, or for more information on using the lactation rooms, please contact the Title IX Coordinator.
To file a complaint specific to non-compliance with pregnancy or parenting modifications, contact the Title IX Coordinator or submit a complaint via this . Student Access Services can also assist with any issues related to pregnancy or parenting modifications.
