Christina Sunday is not just starting a new chapter in her life; she’s rewriting her story.

A Macomb alum and incoming student at Wayne State University, Christina is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in food and nutrition with a minor in exercise science.

Now in her late 30s, Christina’s path to this point has been anything but conventional. Christina’s journey began in the shadows of a personal health scare and a childhood marked by challenges.

About 10 years ago, Christina was working a fully remote job in the health insurance industry. She felt sick and found herself at her lowest point physically, mentally and emotionally. After spending too many days alone, sitting behind a computer, she knew something had to change.

“I made myself a guinea pig,” she said, describing her approach to making her lifestyle changes. “I didn’t use surgery or medication, just hard work and dedication. I dropped a ton of weight and transformed my life.”

Answering a call to help others

Compelled to help others lose weight and live healthier lifestyles, Christina enrolled at Macomb to study Health and Wellness Promotion with the help of the Michigan Reconnect scholarship. She especially enjoyed anatomy and learning CPR, and eventually, she earned her associate degree. She graduated magna cum laude.

Her next step is to transfer to Wayne State. Her long-term goal is to become a dietitian.

“I truly feel like I have a calling and a purpose,” she said. “Food addiction is real. Sugar can have a dopamine effect that’s more addictive than crack cocaine. I want to help people understand that and take control of their health.”

In addition, she said she’s eager to build a sense of community through her studies and future career.

“To be able to help people turn their lives around, that’s everything to me,” she said.
