- Macomb’s Media and Communications Arts (MACA) program gave alum Brittany Laura a blend of design and technical skills.
- Brittany’s training has provided her with a marketable degree and, later, a web-focused career.
Interactive Web Design blends technical skills with creativity
For Macomb alum Brittany Laura, web design is a passion she’s carried with her since she was a teenager. “I was always into the web. When I was on MySpace, I built forums, and I found that interesting,” she said. “I knew this was something I just wanted to do.”
After graduating from East Detroit High School in 2007, Brittany enrolled in adult-education classes and taught herself basic web skills because she didn’t want to attend college. However, an instructor noticed her talent and encouraged her to further develop her skills at Macomb.
That’s where she discovered the Media and Communications Arts (MACA) program, which prepares students for creative careers in fields such as animation, web design, illustration and video production.
One MACA degree in particular piqued Brittany’s interest. Interactive Web Media teaches students skills in web and interactive design using tools like Adobe Creative Cloud, animation, digital illustration and content strategy to prepare them for careers creating engaging digital experiences.
“I love the idea of designing a website from nothing,” she said. “And in this program, you design the page and learn how to make it live on the web.”
Interactive Web Design allowed Brittany the ability to merge both her technical and creative strengths. She knows coding in multiple languages, how to create plugins and mockups, and how to transform static designs into functional, accessible websites.
How Macomb MACA students stand out to employers
Since many MACA classes overlap, she also gained skills in graphic design, motion animation, collaborative media and more. The overlap in classes, along with Brittany’s determination to learn more, helped her earn a total of four Macomb MACA degrees
“It made me more marketable,” she said. “One of the reasons I got my job is because I could say I know HTML and CSS, but I also have that design background. And, with my web-programming experience, I can talk to developers.”
Work Study and internship experiences translate into career
Brittany built on her skills through Macomb’s Work Study program. She eventually landed an internship with the help of Career Services. She worked in web media roles at Hims and Sound True. Today, she works as a web producer for Hitachi Vantara, a data infrastructure and IT services company headquartered in California, in a fully remote role. This is her dream job, she said.
“I never thought I was going to college,” she said. “Then I saw the MACA program and thought this is amazing. For me, Macomb took me where I wanted to go. I had a vision and this was my dream.”
